THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN LA CONFLUENCE

Like St. Paul’s Prison, which was converted into a university campus, or like a former banana ripening facility, which became a digital technology campus, La Confluence itself has been transformed. The area is now home to a diverse mix of students and over 15 institutions of higher education.

WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION, IN EVERY FIELD

STRATE

This world-renowned design school, with another location in Paris, has had about sixty students since the beginning of term in 2019. Located in a former wholesale market building, it awards a state-recognised design degree at the end of a five-year course. Students receive training in interaction and immersion design, mobility design, identity design, product design and spatial design. Nearby, the Studea student residence offers 120 studio flats.

BELLECOUR ECOLE

Founded in Lyon in 1937, the school started out offering courses in fashion design, before extending its curriculum to include all types of careers in the creative industries, from design to entertainment. It ranks in the top 10 design schools, worldwide (The Rookies ranking). Another campus will open in Paris in 2020. The school has 1,230 students in Lyon, including 10% foreign students, at 3 locations, including the one in La Confluence (180 students). The school’s new premises, located on Place Renée-Dufourt in the Denuzière quarter, have a surface area of 500 sq. metres and occupy two floors at the Orangerie, in addition to the premises on Rue de la République and Rue François Dauphin.

EURIDIS BUSINESS SCHOOL

Euridis Business School inaugurated a campus in La Confluence to supplement its campus in Lyon’s 6th district, which had become too small. It is located in the Unity development (Ynfluences Square) at the heart of the Market Quarter. The school trains B2B sales representatives and business engineers. The Confluence campus offers a vocational training certificate (BTS) in Customer Relationship Negotiation and in Digitisation, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Sales and Business Negotiation. 50 students are currently enrolled and three to four new classes will open in 2020 (150 students in all).

SUPDEMOD

Founded in 1952 by Christian Dior, SupdeMod prepares students for careers in fashion design and luxury, creating a world of talent and creativity ranging from prêt-à-porter to haute-couture clothing and accessories. The school’s website provides links to housing information.

ESCEN (BUSINESS AND DIGITAL ECONOMY SCHOOL)

ESCEN is located in Docks Rambaud, on Rue Paul Montrochet. Its 100 students train for careers related to the internet and digital technologies. The Lyon campus is one of the school’s four campuses - the others are in Paris, Bordeaux and San Francisco, not far from Silicon Valley.

ESMA (SCHOOL OF APPLIED ARTS)

Located in the Denuzière quarter, close to the banks of the Saône and the Artemisia student residence, the school can take up to 400 students. It offers applied arts courses: spatial design, graphic design and 3D animation. The school also has locations in Toulouse, Montpellier and Nantes, and on the other side of the Atlantic, in Montreal. Many graduates work at American film studios such as Pixar and DreamWorks. Alongside it, the CineCréatis school trains audiovisual professionals through a three-year programme. The Artemisia student residence is located above the classrooms.

LYON WILD CODE SCHOOL

This school, located in the former St. Joseph’s prison, trains nearly 20 students per class to become professional web developers and data analysts in five months (full time) to ten months (work-study).

LA BURGUNDY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

This international institute of higher education and research, founded in 1899, has more than 2,700 students on 3 campuses: Paris, Dijon and Lyon (Cours Suchet and Rue Paul Montrochet).

This school, located at 18 Cours Suchet, trains nearly 100 future etiopaths in a 6-year program.

UCLY, A UNIVERSITY OPEN TO THE WORLD

In 2015, Lyon Catholic University (UCLy) moved into the former St. Paul’s prison (1852 – 2009). Its students attend classes at two campuses (Carnot, north of Perrache, and St. Paul, in La Confluence). 

UCLy has 6 areas of study :

  • Law, Economics and Social Sciences: ESDES (business school), CIEDEL (local development), ISF (family), IDHL (human rights) and the UNESCO Chair.
  • Letters and Languages: French Culture, ESTRI (Translation and Interpreting)
  • Sciences: IFTLM (Medical), ESQESE (corporate health), ESTBB (biotechnologies)
  • Theology and religious sciences: IPER (Religions)

From prisons to life at its most open (ITW of Thierry Magnin)

A DIGITAL CAMPUS

Since 2017, La Confluence has had a campus devoted to training in the digital sector (800 students, 17 programmes). Located in the King Charles building, the digital campus is associated with the 101 coding school (120 students), providing training accessible to all; a second-chance school.

THE APPRENTIS D'AUTEUIL TRAINING RESTAURANT

La Salle à Manger is a training restaurant whose objective is to train apprentices in the hotel and restaurant industry. It is designed to help young people in difficult situations (family, school, social, financial, etc.) improve their employability. The first training restaurant was created in La Confluence in 2013. The restaurant is open to the public by reservation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

A number of schools in La Confluence, such as UCLy, offer continuing education. The INFA Foundation, recognised as an organisation of public interest, has a branch in Lyon, operating on Rue Denuzière in the fields of hotels and restaurants, social services, healthcare and services to individuals, business and digital skills.
